Description This shrub has narrow pointed leaves, smooth and bright green darkening in colour as they mature. The white flowers are produced on cone-shaped clusters and smell sweet, followed by black berries. Some cultivated species have yellow and variegated leaves.
Hazards All of the plant is poisonous but particularly the berries.
Effects Even a small amount of berries can be serious if eaten. The symptoms are vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pains, convulsions.
Flowering Period Summer with black berries appearing in autumn.
Location Common in Southern Britain particularly on chalky soils.
