Common Name(s) Rhubarb
Latin Name Rheum Rhaponticum
Description Large triangular shaped leaves wrinkled with a wavy edge. The stalks are green or red. Small cream coloured flowers appear  from the centre of the plant.
Hazards The leaves are very poisonous. Rhubarb stalks when uncooked are very bitter so they are unlikely to cause problems.
Effects Within a short time of eating the leaves nausea, weakness, twitching, vomiting and drowsiness can occur.
Flowering Period Stalks ripen early summer, flowers appear summer to autumn.
Location Mainly gardens and allotments. Some varieties are cultivated for ornamental purposes.
