Latin Name Euonymous Europaeus
Description The leaves are elongated, oval and pointed at the tip turning red in autumn. The bark is grey and smooth. The small flowers are greenish in colour. The fruits are deep pink that split to reveal an orange covered seed. Cultivated varieties are grown for their striking autumn foliage and fruits.
Hazards The fruits or berries are the most likely part of the plant to cause poisoning.
Effects Stomach pains, diarrhoea, vomiting. In severe cases convulsions and loss of consciousness.
Flowering Period Summer followed by fruits in autumn.
Location Woodland and scrub, more common in chalky or limestone soils. Many cultivated varieties so also parks and gardens.
